2009 was a tremendous year in music especially for rap. The year consisted of the transformation of good rappers to international superstars. These select few rappers have withstood the test of time and have proven they are great enough to make this prestigious list. Here they are in no particular order…

Jay-Z – Jigga, HOV, whatever you want to call him has had an undeniable influence on rap in 2009. He single-handily brought back the New York City nationalism that had been missing for a few years with his smash hit Empire State of Mind which payed homage to his great city. The release of The Blueprint 3 did not disappoint Jay-Z fans one bit as many believe it was able to reach the heights of his previous chart-topping albums. All in all 09′ was an amazing year for Mr.Rocafella.

Kanye West – Despite Kanye’s infamous troubles with the media and award shows. He was still able to bang out his most unique piece of work to date with his album 808’s and Heartbreaks. The album featured a new trend-based Yeezy, who utilized auto-tune to the extent of an artist like T-Pain. Although the album received mixed reviews it certainly got the point across that Kanye’s creative ability stands beyond all others and also proved he is not going anywhere anytime soon.

T.I. – Although much of T.I.’s year was spent behind bars the success of his sixth studio album Paper Trail sent him out with a bang. With chart-topping songs such as “Live Your Life”, “Dead and Gone”, Paper Trail reached double platinum success. Thus catapulting  T.I. into guaranteed future success once he returns from prison. Watch out for the rejuvenated TIP in 2010.

Lil Wayne – Not enough can be said about Weezy F. due to his success of selling 1.5 million records in the first week of his sixth studio album: Tha Carter III all the way to the hundreds of features he had on songs and in mixtapes. Upon Wayne’s countdown to lockdown in prison he released a monstrous mixtape in which he recorded over some of today’s most popular hip-hop tracks on the radio including singles like “Run This Town”, “Ice Cream Paint Job”, “Throw It in the Bag”. Weezy has also been helping out his fellow Cash Money/ Young Money members produce hot tracks en route to their success. Lastly Wayne is soon releasing his final piece of work, before entering prison, with his new album:Rebirth which is set to release in February 2010. Lil Wayne has done everything he possibly could to keep his name alive before he hits jail therefore propelling him to be on of the top rappers in 2009.
